Coasters on Tour

Cornwall is a wonderful place to cycle, but there are plenty of other fantastic cycling destinations. So occasionally, Coasters get together and head off to explore new territory overseas. Read all about our adventures here and maybe you'll be inspired to come along on the next trip... we ventured to Mallorca in 2019 and France in 2018. Contact Matt Lee if you'd like and adventure!!

Brittany 2018

Picture
Fourteen Coasters took to France in April 2108 for a circular 300 mile loop from Roscoff taking in the best of Finistere and Brittany.  We cycle toured around coastal landscapes, beaches, estuarine inlets, forests and countryside putting miles of smiles on our faces.  We had sunshine, just a couple of brief showers and a little mist along with a lot of pastries, food, wine, cidre and beer.

Day 1 Roscoff to Douarnenez

A gentle and generally flat start as we rolled out of the ferry port in sunshine, along the Morlaix River and to our first (of many) coffee and croissant stops.  More hilly terrain followed as we climbed up through a National Park past Huelgoat and Pleyben.  Think we will remember the D14 climb and the following descent fondly…  A slight detour was needed to a bike shop to replace two tyres (and mischievously rearrange sports trophies), but soon back on the road towards our evening destination of Douarnenez, a pretty coastal town.

Day 2  Crozon Peninsula

For the only time on the trip we decided to split into groups, a shorter 60 miler, and two 100 milers - the tortoise group and the fast boys. Some rolling roads and fast descents meant the 100 miles were eaten up after the 40 mile split of groups.  The look on Lucky Lindo’s face when we finished in Brest with a beer and chips was a picture. A quick curry refuel and snooze and we were off again…. A first 100 for Sam and Rodders.
Day 3 Brest to Guisseney

We followed the coast for most of the day and after some early mist burnt off were bathed in sunshine, passing a race and sportive on a beautiful rolling coast road. Ice-creams and refreshment were the order of the day, the lure of the sea was too much, as three took a dip in bib shorts on a white sandy beach. Lushingtons. A final boom on a long flat meant some missed the turning for the accommodation but who can resist a bit of speed… We pretty much took over a small hotel, which was lucky as by the time the cognac was poured the laughter was loud.

Day 4 Back to the ferry

The day started off in high jinks as Rodders's bike went missing, luckily we had a spare.  A breezy but flat 40 miler took us back to Roscoff for a final beer and meal.  A fully loaded 5 mile time trial (kudos Mike) meant we arrived in Plouescat for mid-morning pastries before the peloton cruised into Roscoff in bright sunshine and in plenty of time for the journey home.
In all a great trip with great people. Thanks to all the accommodation sorters, translators, loopers, drink buyers, Coonick carriers, navigators, supermarket fetchers, wind bashers and energy givers.  Roll on Mallorca 2019…
